I earned my PhD at the University of Michigan in Survey Methodology (inter-disciplinary program) with advisor Frederick Conrad (also worked closely with Jim Lepkowski). I took my specialty courses in social psychology (Daphne Oyserman and Shinobu Kitayama), and Norbert Schwarz was on my dissertation committee. My dissertation was on interpersonal interactions between interviewers and respondents, and the paralinguistic indicators of affect and cognitive difficulty that lead to item nonresponse. I have a strong interest in the decisions to participate (or not) in surveys as well. I find myself now studying how culture, sex, and race predict item nonresponse on sexuality questions in phone surveys.
